Getting Started

Quick start

To read the most recent articles published in JSID, click on the "Browse Current Issue" link on the left side of the JSID home page. This will bring you to the Table of Contents of the current issue. Abstracts without references are free and do not require a subscription. A subscription is required to view the references and full-text articles in PDF format.

Searching

The Quick Search:

The quickest way to find a specific article is by using the search features. On the publication home page of both publications, there is a "quick search" form where you can perform a simple search by entering a keyword or an author's name or affiliation. The quick search, searches across both SID online publications and uses the "full record" as the search criteria. You can enter an author's name or affiliation or any keyword or group of keywords contained in an article title or abstract, limited to 25 characters.

The Simple Search:

To perform a more advanced search, click on the "Current Issue" or "All Online Issues" in the "Search" box. From this form, you can perform advanced Boolean searches by typing text into the fields and using the pull-down menus to select different criteria. For example, you can search on keyword, author and affiliation. Example: "LCD" in "Title/Abstract/Keyword," "Park" in "Author" and "Pusan National University" in "Affiliation."

The Advanced Search:

At the top of the Simple Search form there is a link to "Advanced Search." With this form, you can perform complex Boolean searches by manually typing in the criteria and operators. To perform the example search above, you would type in "lcd title abstract keyword park author pusan national university aff."
Note that searching is case-insensitive.

Browsing

The "browse" feature enables you to browse the publication Tables of Contents. Clicking on the "All Online Issues" link will bring you to a list of all available volumes. Clicking on the "View HTML TOC will display the issue Table of Contents (TOC). At the top of the TOC are links to the issue sections. Clicking on a section link will bring you to the top of the section.

Subscription controlled features

Subscription controlled features are those features which require a subscription to access. These features include the full-text articles in PDF and GZipped PS format and the hyperlinked references within the abstracts. Links to the full-text articles are found in the search results, the TOCs, and all abstracts. If you are accessing the online publications from a corporation or library that has a subscription to the Journal of the Society of Information Display or the SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers, your access will be automatic and you will not have to log in. If you are accessing either publication with an individual member subscription, you will be prompted for a username and password when you click on any subscription controlled feature. For more information on subscriptions and registration, click here.

Abstracts with references

If you are not logged in, abstracts will appear without references. At the top and bottom of the abstract there will be a link appearing as "Show References." Clicking on this link will display a login screen. After logging in, the abstract will reappear with all of the hyperlinked references. There are two types of references which will link to a wide variety of online databases, including CrossRef. For a current list of source destinations of references, click here.

The two types of references are "regular references" and "reverse references" referred to as "citing articles. Regular references are hyperlinks to the source citation. Reverse references are links to articles that cite the article being viewed. For more information on references, click here.

Online navigation

All of the dynamic areas of the SID online publication include easy navigation links at the top and bottom of each page.

From an abstract within a search results list, you can navigate through the complete hitlist by clicking the "Previous / Next" links at the top and bottom of the abstract. The Table of Contents abstracts work the same way: clicking on the "Previous / Next Abstract" links will enable you to navigate through the complete Table of Contents.

Options for selected articles

Within each Table of Contents, abstract and search results list, there is a multi-function tool where you can perform one of several actions on multiple articles. Originally designed as an author tool to download citations into citation manager software, the Options for Selected Articles pull-down menu enables you to download citations from all checked articles or send them to your MyArticles collection. Using the checkbox next to each article title, check each article you would like to work with. Then use the Options pull-down menu to view or download the citations in your preferred format. You can also use the Options pull-down menu to send articles to your "MyArticles" collection.

Hyperlinked author names

All article author names within each Table of Contents, abstract and search results list are hyperlinked. Clicking on the author name will perform a Scitation-wide search for all articles written by the linked author. SID online publication subscribers also have access to SPIN, so your SID login will also enable you to use the author search and to view the abstracts within the author search results list.
